What is the Google Map Pack?
The Map Pack is the box of three local businesses with a map that Google shows when someone searches for a service nearby, such as “plumber near me”. It sits above the regular website results.
What it shows
Each listing comes from a business’s Google Business Profile: name, rating, reviews, hours, photos and buttons to call or get directions. Customers can contact you without ever visiting your website.
How Google chooses who appears
Google describes local ranking as three factors working together.
- ✓Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched for.
- ✓Distance: how close you are to the searcher, or to the area they named.
- ✓Prominence: how well known and trusted you look, from reviews, listings and mentions across the web.
Why it moves
Because distance is part of the ranking, your position changes as the searcher moves. You can rank first on one street and not appear a mile away. That is why we measure on a grid of points, not one pin.
What you can control
You cannot change where customers are standing. You can improve relevance and prominence: a complete and accurate profile, the right categories, honest reviews, consistent listings and a website with clear service and area pages.
